The treasures of Graubünden

Chur: Switzerland's oldest city, young at heart

Excavations prove that Chur has been continuously inhabited for over 5,000 years. No wonder: since Celtic times, the city has been located on important trade routes across the Alps. Chur impresses with an 800-year-old cathedral, which is still the seat of the bishop today. Stroll through the picturesque, car-free old town. Or enjoy a glass of wine from the Grisons Rhine Valley on the lovingly restored Arcas Platz. Chur is the only Swiss city with its own ski area, Brambüesch, which you can easily reach by cable car for skiing or hiking. The Camp Au campsite on the outskirts of the city is idyllically located and can be reached quickly by bus.

Tip: Every year in June, the streets of Chur fill with musicians, clowns and acrobats during the Buskers street art festival.

Val Müstair: an inspiring place surrounded by breathtaking nature

Benedictine nuns still live in the 1,200-year-old monastery of St. Johann in Val Müstair today. Thanks to the paintings in the monastery church, St. Johann is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Val Müstair lies on the edge of Switzerland's only national park, which covers an area of 170 km2, and is the starting point for countless hikes and mountain bike tours. With a bit of luck, you may spot bearded vultures, marmots and ibexes in the wild. Val Müstair is a good hour's drive from the TCS campsites in Scoul or Samedan.

Camping at the four lakes: Glamour, kayaking and kite surfing

St. Moritz has been radiating glamour since long before James Bond shook off his pursuers in the Piz Bernina area in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’. The resort has hosted the Olympic Games twice. The boutiques on Via Serlas and the numerous Gault Millau restaurants are frequented by celebrities.

Explore the nearby Engadin lake district with Lake St. Moritz, Lake Sils, Lake Silvaplana and Lej da Champfèr. Thanks to the Majola wind, sailors, windsurfers and kitesurfers will find their Mecca here. Those who prefer to use pure muscle power can hop into a canoe or kayak or try their hand at stand-up paddleboarding (SUP).

Active camping in Graubünden: from thrills to culinary delights

The Graubünden region is perfect for camping enthusiasts and outdoor fans. Cyclists and mountain bikers will find pure cycling bliss for all levels of difficulty across 17,000 kilometers. Hikers are also spoilt for choice: 11,000 kilometers of marked trails – from culinary trails and family-friendly themed trails to challenging high-altitude tours – are waiting to be explored. Enjoy a wet and wild ride rafting through the Rhine Gorge or on the River Inn.

A stay in Graubünden is also a culinary delight. For starters, we recommend a platter of mountain cheese and “Bündnerfleisc” (air-dried beef). For the main course, try one of the traditional dishes such as “Capuns”, “Maluns” or “Pizzoccheri”. And for dessert, enjoy a delicious slice of “Bündner Nusstorte” (nut cake). “Bumperfatscha” – Romansh for “bon appétit”.

Tip: A visit to the village of Guarda is particularly enjoyable for children. There they can follow in the footsteps of the famous children's book character “Schellenursli”.
