Sion: proud centre since 7000 years

The Tourbillon and Valeria castles tower high above the picturesque old town of Sion with its numerous monuments and museums. Thanks to its location and large bus station, Sion is the ideal starting point for excursions to the charming neighbouring side valleys, as well as for wine tours and hikes.

Tip: In July and August, the Church of Valeria Castle resounds with first-class sacred music during the International Festival of Ancient Organs.

Brig: from the Stockalper Palace to the Simplon Pass

In the 19th century, Napoleon had the panoramic Simplon Pass expanded for his armies from Brig. And since 1913, trains have been rushing through the 14.6 km long Lötschberg Tunnel just a few kilometres away. But Brig is more than just a transport hub: its picturesque old town with its imposing patrician houses invites you to linger – preferably with an excellent glass of Valais wine.

The 17th-century Stockalper Palace is well worth a visit. With its three towers, popularly known as ‘Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar’, this Baroque palace is the city's most famous landmark.

Martigny: fertile ground for connoisseurs and art lovers

Even the Romans appreciated Martigny's location in the sun-drenched Rhône Valley. Excavations, including a restored amphitheatre, bear witness to this: in October, it hosts the battle of the ‘queens’, the strongest cows in Valais. Martigny's La Bâtiaz and Vieux-Bourg districts invite visitors to stroll around their ecclesiastical and secular buildings.

In addition to exquisite grape varieties, strawberries, peaches and asparagus also grow around Martigny. It is no surprise that this small town delights visitors with its high-class gastronomy. Art lovers will find a Gallo-Roman museum, an automobile museum and biannual special exhibitions by international artists at the Fondation Gianadda.
