Camping in the Lake Geneva region: natural beauty between the Jura mountains and the Alps

When you approach Lake Geneva in good visibility, you will be greeted by a panorama that will remain in your memory. Majestic Alpine peaks on the French side of the lake and vineyards gently sloping down to the shore on the Swiss side. In addition to Lake Geneva, there are other lakes to discover in the Vaud region and the Three Lakes region: Lake Neuchâtel, the idyllic Lake Murten and the natural paradise of Lac de Joux at the foot of the Jura mountains.

La vie est belle in western Switzerland

Lausanne: medieval streets and Olympic spirit

The medieval old town of Lausanne with its narrow, steep streets, squares and monuments stretches out around the Gothic cathedral. In the La Cité district, you can enjoy a glass of fine Epesses wine from the neighbouring Lavaux wine region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in one of the bistros.

The Métro takes you almost silently down to Lake Geneva and Ouchy. With its promenades, parks and marina, this district is the city's recreational area. From there, you can walk to the Olympic Museum, where an interactive exhibition and 1,500 exhibits convey everything you need to know about the world's oldest sporting event.

Geneva: a stone's throw from the UN, the city centre and the Jet d'Eau fountain

From the UN to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to the International Red Cross, Geneva is home to many important organisations. In addition to its international character, the city exudes elegance and joie de vivre. The lake with its landmark ‘Jet d'eau’ (fountain) attracts people in every season. The Carouge and Quartier des Bains (Baths District) neighbourhoods delight visitors with their small boutiques, galleries, cafés and restaurants.

From the picturesque village of Orbe, you can reach the spa town of Yverdon-les-Bains in 15 minutes by car. There, water lovers can choose between the fine beach on Lake Neuchâtel and the sulphurous healing waters of the thermal baths.

Numerous hiking and cycling routes take you through the vineyards or along the Jura slopes of the region, offering breathtaking views of the Alps on a clear day.

The Lake Geneva region and the Three Lakes region for active people: off to new shores

On the northern shore of Lake Geneva between Nyon and Montreux, one plant reigns supreme: the grapevine. Millions of its offspring grow on rolling hills down to the lake shore. The vineyard terraces of Lavaux are a UNESCO World Heritage Site: on various wine trails between Lausanne and Montreux, you can not only enjoy the view of the lake and the Alps, but also stop off at many wineries to taste wines and typical regional products.

Montreux is particularly worth visiting in June and July. During the famous Montreux Jazz Festival, dozens of international stars flock to the spa town. Free outdoor concerts, bars and stalls on the lakeshore create a festival atmosphere even without a concert ticket.

Near Montreux, in a particularly charming location directly on Lake Geneva, lies Chillon Castle. A tour of the magnificent halls, vaults and courtyards will transport you back to the Middle Ages.

The small town of Murten (French: Morat) was founded in the 12th century, around the same time as Chillon Castle. Located on Lake Murten, it charms visitors with its well-preserved towers, city walls and ‘Lauben’, the covered arcades. Be sure to try a piece of ‘Nidlechueche’ – the traditional cream cake – in Murten. ‘En Guete’ – bon appétit!

Tip: If you are looking for a natural paradise and peace and quiet, you will find it at Lac de Joux. Located at an altitude of 1,000 metres between the gentle foothills of the Jura mountains, the lake is ideal for boating, hiking and cycling. In winter, the lake freezes over in some years and becomes the largest natural ice rink in Europe.
